The historic first sport route to get bolted in Safe Harbor. 

  Little pockets, sometimes sharp, and just enough holds for fun, thoughtful climbing. Left-hand pocket used to get to the not-as-good-as-you'd-like horizontal near the top had a piece break off on Sunday. Was a little wet/dirty inside, and somewhat sharp, but usable. Crux was right at the top for us. My partner worked up the arete to the right and had a tricky step left to get to the anchors. I stayed in the corner, eventually getting a hand out/up left, then a heel to get settled. I then came up and right to the anchors.

Crossroads

Slabby face climbing with ample protection. Fun moves: chances for high steps, hand and foot matches, hidden fingertip pockets, tiny edges and nubs for the toes. A more sustained challenge than other Safe Harbor 5.9s like Adopted Son, Tonga and SH Direct. 

  I went with Eric Horst's grade of 5.9+, though a Rock and Ice article (from around the 1990s?) called it a 5.10a. Hard 9 or easy 10 are both accurate enough for the subjective YDS.

Crux is getting to the high 1st bolt.  Make difficult moves right off the ground to thin crack.  Work feet up and gain jug just left of the 1st bolt.  Make the clip and power through deceptively tricky mantle to large ledge.  Traverse ledge to the right and clip 2nd bolt.  Work up last section on thin feet to a large crimp.  Make another move or two to gain clipping jug just right of the anchors.

Follow right facing rap from below crossroad to Hydroman anchors

Discontinuous crack between Parabolic Corner and Ad 2 Vic. Follow upper crack to cliff top then traverse left to Parabolic anchors.

Climb up a steep left-facing dihedral most of the way to the top, then work around the arete on your  right to the finish.

Climb up a steep left-facing dihedral. Halfway up, move around the arete to the face on the right, and finish there.

Climb steep slab to a high bolt. Passing a clump of trees (they're on the climber's left) to second bolt. Follow remaining bolts diagonally up and left to anchors. Optionally, continue to anchors on cross roads.

Start below Ad 2 Vic.   Gain small ledge and clip buttonhead.   Move up right to flake (gear).   Move again up right to crack and gear.   Follow crack to big ledge and move right and finish on Deep "V" crack or 5.9 Crack.

Climbs the arete to the left of Mental As Anything. Harder version starts on the arete while the easier start uses a short ramp to access the large horizontal rail. Climb the arete using crimps, pockets, jugs, jams and kneebars. Don't be punter and cop a rest by rocking over to the slab to the right.

Climb thin face over 2 bolts to ledge. Clip third and move to anchor.

Thin climbing, a little heady getting to the anchors, a 4th bolt might calm the nerves, but it was chopped and never replaced. Easy climbing above the third bolt, despite the runout.

A diagonally traversing slab. Tiptoe up the ledge system, hop up to a tree, then work up the face to the anchors. Look for a big translucent crystalline formation on the last big footstep.

Climb face and cracks (which may or may not become apparent) to trees.   Route needs cleaned

Climb easy corner/ledges to top ledge. Plug in Camalot. Climb face. There are pockets for left hand and corner for right hand. Stay left of nose for full effect.  Finish on thin seem thru V notch to anchors.

 You can pull around nose to the right at first bolt dropping the grade to 5.10, but bad swinging falls.

Start right of Adopted Son. Follow thin white streak to a small mantling ledge. Maybe get gear to the left. Then up to pocket. Fiddle some gear into it. Straight up to horizontal crack and gear. Finally straight up to finish on Last move of Adopted Son  (optional gear right at top of crack).

Intro to Safe Harbor 101. Starts on broken rock, then moves up slabs broken by tiny ledges.

Climb delicate moves and possibly the crux of the entire route to a high first bolt.  Easy climbing through two more bolts lead to another crux with a deceptively good finger slot.  It's not over yet, as a fun boulder problem up high guards the anchors.

The northern end of Safe Harbor South, closest to the dam - and the last area you'll reach walking in from Green Hill tunnel. The late afternoon sun lasts longer here than on many nearby areas. It's named for the oldest sport route at Safe Harbor, the classic Hydroman 5.11a/b, which ends on the highest block of rock on top of the wall.
